How Chiropractic Care Can Help Reduce Inflammation.
What is Inflammation?
Inflammation is the body’s way to fight bugs, germs, and foreign invaders (including cells made that shouldn’t be there, like cancer cells), it also helps heal damaged tissues from injury.
This sounds good, doesn’t it? That’s because a healthy inflammatory response IS GOOD.
Your inflammatory response is guided by your immune and nervous systems, to produce the required army of white blood cells and bring in the healing and clean-up crew. It is an essential part of how your body works. It does lead to some redness, swelling and pain, but you are left healed and restored as it resolves.

So why all the bad press about inflammation?
Chronic Inflammation is the real danger here. Chronic Inflammation is when the inflammatory response does not switch off. Signs and symptoms of chronic inflammation include:
- Allergies and asthma
- High blood pressure
- Fatigue and lethargy
- Skin problems
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Pain in the joints
- Congestion
- Frequent infections
- Indigestion
- Shortness of breath
- Stiffness
- Weight gain
Chronic Inflammation has contributed to and caused many of today’s lifestyle disease processes, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. There are even disease processes when the immune system identifies normal body tissues as foreign and mounts an inflammatory attack on that normal tissue for example;
- Rheumatoid arthritis which attacks healthy joints,
- Crohn’s disease which attacks normal bowel,
- Hashimoto’s disease, which attacks the normal thyroid,
- Multiple Sclerosis which attacks nerve and spinal coverings
What causes Chronic Inflammation?
There are many contributing factors to a chronic inflammation issue. Some of these factors include:
- Poor posture, repetitive injuries
- Chronic exposure to toxins (in foods, cleaning chemicals, beauty product chemicals etc)
- Chronic high stress
- Insufficient sleep
- Overeating and nutrient deficiency
- Plus many more incongruencies between our lifestyle and what our genetics require.
Can Chiropractic Help?
Yes, research has shown that Chiropractic has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) after just 9 lumbar spinal manipulations. So chiropractic adjustments can help reduce the inflammation process.
Also by removing poor postural stresses through chiropractic care, we can reduce the stress levels in the body. A well-aligned and well-moving joint does not send stress (nociceptive) signals to the brain. Thereby reducing the need for the inflammatory process.
Chiropractors are also trained in lifestyle habits that will help you reduce the contributing factors to chronic inflammation. We can guide you on sleeping requirements, nutritional requirements, movement requirements and stress-reducing activities. This will help you get to the root cause of the inflammation. You could take an anti-inflammatory to kill the pain, but it will inevitably return when you stop taking it if the underlying root cause of the inflammation is still present. Chiropractic helps you get to the root cause of your inflammation and could help you heal for life.
